June 2 2013 – A new, state-of-the-art metal shredder and full downstream will be up and running at the new Ben Weitsman scrap yard in New Castle, Pa., in the first quarter of 2014, company president Adam Weitsman announced. “We’ve spent years building our metals recycling network in western and central New York and northern Pennsylvania into a highly efficient system,” Weitsman, President of Upstate Shredding-Ben Weitsman, said. “We have ambitious goals for our New Castle yard, and this shredder is the first step in putting that plan of expansion into motion.” The company expects to spend several million dollars in the region over the next several years to create and develop a new recycling network of yards in Pennsylvania, Ohio and surrounding states. “It took us years to build up our feeder yard system around our Owego shredder and this new shredding location will be the launching pad of the next phase of our expansion,” Weitsman said.  “We’ve examined the markets surrounding the New Castle facility, and we plan to make several new acquisitions of scrap yards in the region to develop the network of yards to feed the New Castle shredder.” While smaller than the company’s flagship shredder in [...]

July 1 2013 Two new press releases this week: The Steel Index (TSI) is pleased to announce the launch today of two metallurgical coal price indices. Metallurgical coal is a key raw material input used along with iron ore in the production of steel around the world. The launch responds to increasing customer requests for TSI to expand its steel raw material coverage, following the success of its iron ore and scrap reference prices which are widely used by industrial companies in index-linked pricing arrangements and as the settlement basis for financial price risk management tools. “This launch is a key milestone for TSI. It enables us to provide the complete suite of prices for key raw material inputs used in the production of steel,” notes Tim Hard, TSI’s Director in Singapore. “The metallurgical coal supply chain is following in the footsteps of iron ore and currently evaluating the adoption of index-linked pricing arrangements. Miners, traders and buyers have been increasingly vocal in asking TSI to develop indices utilizing our respected, robust methodology. These indices are also likely to help unlock further appetite for steel price risk management tools, as their utilization grows in tandem with iron ore and scrap. [...]

In an all-cash transaction, the Owego, N.Y., based company purchased Valley Recycling, owner of the 28 year old scrap yard in Allegany, N.Y. “This facility has historically had lower sales volumes and higher margins; we’re going to change that,” Weitsman said. “We’re going to raise prices paid out to customers, fully renovate the facility, add staff, and operate 7 days a week to make this yard the very best it can be for both our customers and the community.” The yard will be known as Ben Weitsman of Allegany; the transition will occur in approximately 30 days. The yard will benefit from longer hours, 7-day-a-week operation, a complete overhaul of the property and increased manpower. Several important press releases and news announcements for this week of August 5 2013 - WEAK DEMAND GROWTH UNSETTLES PRICE SENTIMENT IN EMERGING STEEL MARKETS Challenging business conditions persist in the Russian Federation. Domestic steelmakers have begun to lobby the government for stricter anti-dumping measures to combat the threat from rising import tonnage. Stockists remain cautious over the strength of underlying consumption in August, citing the subdued construction season. The recovery in shipments to tube fabricators, OEMs and mechanical engineering companies has also been weaker than expected. Uncertainty continues to unsettle business confidence in India. Underlying demand remains weak, and shows no signs of picking up in the near-future. The monsoon rains have been heavier than expected. Downstream demand in Ukraine is expected to remain sluggish in the August-September period. Market sentiment has been eroded by weak underlying demand growth and deteriorating economic fundamentals. Stockists are booking for only immediate requirements due to continuing price fluctuations. Support from external demand remains limited. Turkish steelmakers have had mixed success in their efforts to advance higher transaction values to distributors. Domestic buyers contend that the current price initiative is ill-timed, counterproductive and will only escalate import tonnages. Demand for construction steel in [...]
